The Chequers

This is a useful stop, less than two and a half miles from Junction 6 of the M40. It's a characterful, rambling old pub with a lovely summer garden and the vine-covered conservatory (children are now allowed to play here) looks out over the garden. Unprepossessing exterior, cosy interior with an eclectic mix of paraphernalia - from dried flowers to an unusual collection of bottles and paintings. A low oak panelled settle and character chairs such as a big spiral legged carving chair around a few good antiques oak tables. There are red and black shiny tiles in one corner with rugs. The beer is all Brakspear, but that's good enough for me. Food is served lunch and evenings and is traditional but wholesome - vegetarian option available. The pub is open 11.30-2.30, 6-11 (Sun 12-3, 7-10.30). No accommodation here.
