The Black Horse  

A rather good pub on the road out of Wimborne and one well worth a stop off at.

The pub now trades mainly on its food side rather than the ale, but it still serves a good pint of Hall & Woodhouse's ales. The pub now has a gastro-pub feel to it.

The pub is run by Ben & Emma, Emma runs front of house & Ben is a Michelin Star Trained chef, he tries to source all his fresh produce locally and it is of a very high standard but at pub prices. Ben recently won a silver award with Hall & Woodhouse for best Chef & a bronze award for best beer quality.

On Sunday they also do a full roast menu. If you fancy answering a few questions, Sunday is also quiz night.

The pub is situated on the A350, between the junction with the A31 and Spetisbury. This is the main Poole to Blandford road which passes the edge of the village.

This pub tends towards a 'gastro-pub', however, it is a friendly and comfortable house where, if you preferred, you could well enjoy a pint, or three, without feeling 'uncomfortable'. There is plenty of parking space, with easy access and exit.

During our visit, the service was excellent, the food good, especially the fish dishes, from a very good pub menu at realistic prices. The beer is Hall and Woodhouse, which I like, and the bitter, (Gold), at least, is well kept (didn't try the Tanglefoot). The choice of house wine by the glass was, however, limited to French; not bad, but a choice to include a New World wine would have been appreciated.

Definitely worth a return visit, just as the sign outside says: "Friendly food and home grown staff". (20/07/07)
