The Cherry Tree

An excellent pub just off the A34 as you're about to leave Oxfordshire.

A real gem of a pub that has its beams on the outside as much as the inside. Originally two 18th century cottages made into one building, this pub is on the main drag through Steventon just under the brow of the hill - so the road can be fast here. There is a step down into the pub, so not good for the disabled, though access might be possible via the beer garden, watch out for the uneven floor levels. Once inside you are presented with a number of rooms, some are small and feel really cosy and private, all are original in shape and it feels like you are in someone's house - which you are. The floors are sometimes bare flags, sometimes carpet. On the walls are old pictures, bookcases and other country life paraphernalia. Seating is at round and square dark wood tables and is a mixture of chairs, settles and high backed old church pews. Not all have padding. The atmosphere is good, though there is a big sports screen TV in the back room along with the bar billiards table.

This is a great pub for real ale (often having a beer festival in April), they serve up to 5 ales: Red Shoot Tom's Tipple, Butcombe Bitter, 6X, Charles Wells Bombardier, Wadworth Henry's IPA, two of which are often on gravity from barrels behind the bar.

The food is excellent here, all home made with daily specials on the board. Plenty of choice for vegetarians and all filling. Prices are around £6.95 for a main meal rising to £8.95 in places. Service is efficient and the food is well presented.

Well worth a stop over if you are in the area.

English folk music is played here every third Sunday of the month. There is a beer garden for the summer and a large car park. One of the rooms is also no smoking.
