Kelham Island Tavern

The Kelham Island Tavern on Russell Street is a real must visit if you are in Sheffield for the beer. It is near the Fact Cat - in fact just round the corner in the same industrial district - and The Wellington.

The inside through the narrow entrance, is a single room where the smart new dark wood bar is, slightly to the left on entrance. The pub is small and bijou, though doesn't seem to get overly busy except during lunchtimes, festivals and CAMRA members visits. There is a second room out back which is lighter in decor and has more room. It also leads out to the beer garden.

All the fixtures and fitting are 'new' though designed to give a lived in feel. There is a small seating area to the left of entrance in the front window. Tables are small round ones with stools/chairs/bench. There is also a fireplace here, but we were not sure it was a real fire a this was a warm spring day and it was not a major draw for the eyes.

To the right of the bar there is another window seating area much like the first, but we headed for the rear by the toilets where we saw a button backed leather sofa with a long table in front if it. This was a comfortable place to sit and talk. A 'garden' room to the rear has more seating and for the summer you can actually sit out in the garden.

The KIT has 12 ales on most of the time and all are served well with or without sparkler in over-sized glasses so you got a real pint/half, and tasted great on this visit. They also do draught continental beers and a cider.

Food is served Tue-Sat 12-3 and is traditional - there are rolls at other times. Beers are served in oversize lined glasses to ensure a full pint.

Access for the disabled is possible and there is a designated disabled toilet.

No accommodation here.

Nearest tram stop is Shalesmoor.
