The Bull's Head

Just off the A45 between Birmingham and Coventry, the pub is said to be at the very centre of England, and has a brass plaque to prove it. While a sign amid the flowers in the courtyard gives exact distances to the UK's major cities (104 miles to London, apparently), it neglects to mention the pub's proximity to The National Motoreycle Museum at Bickenhill - if you fancy a day out.

While its size may reflect its days as a 17th-century coaching inn - complete with heavy oak beams, harvest-style bunches of wheat and faux-naive depictions of milkmaids on plates - this wayfarers' retreat still achieves a sense of intimate seclusion.

Amid the well-travelled furniture and period ale casks it is also possible to hear strains of piped-in classical music. Eating and drinking here is a real pleasure. Wash down some excellent food with a refreshing glass of Montana white wine or Hardy's Red.

Not a cheap pub.

Unless you are vegetarian, you'll find it very hard to choose between the great choices here (served noon to 10pm, Sun noon to 930pm). Try starting with a deliciously light Caesar salad, moving swiftly onto a chicken arrabbiata - spiced, grilled chicken breast on a bed of creamy tomato and basil pasta - or veggie delight: a filo basket with roasted butternut squash & spinach and pine nuts.
