The English Rose

The English Rose is a family run pub in the traditional sense. With a good selection of well kept real ale and value food, we offer our customers a friendly atmosphere to enjoy traditonal ale.

We were voted the "Pub of the Year 2006" by the local CAMRA, and we want to extend our thanks to all those who voted for us.

The English Rose has quite a chequered past. Formerly the notorious Rabbit, the English Rose has seen plenty of history since it was built in the 17th Century. One of the oldest pubs in Luton, it survived the Civil War, during which is said a group of royalists stopped off for a drink before proceeding into town for a skirmish. Through the Industrial Revolution, surviving the riots of 1919 and the Depression of the 30s, the pub has been a popular drinking spot for the local residents. More recently, the Rose was known to have been a popular haunt of the 60s actress icon Diana Dors, who would pop in for a cup of tea or sometimes even help out behind the bar. When Diana Dors died aged 52, she left her son an encoded message which could hold the key to the cash fortune she amassed, bringing the pub into the limelight as staff and regulars were left wondering how far - or how near - Diana's fortune might lie from the pub she so often visited. Unfortunately, as the next clue to the fortune's location is said to have been in the possession of Diana's now deceased third husband Alan Lake, the treasure has yet to be discovered.
