The Bricklayer's Arms

This has won a pub award of late and it is easy to see why. It is a friendly pub that you would miss if you blinked as you went by on the main road. Not far from the river the Bricklayer's Arms serves the full range of Taylor's beers, which is a welcome sight this far south of Yorkshire. It also does four guest ales too, usually with a theme attached. So you might find a few beers from Daleside or any other micro-brewery. Unfortunately don't beleive their website when it says they do Erdinger or Leffe - they don't!

Food is also served here (again beware the website) from 5.30pm. It is cooked by Scoff who are down the road and brought to your table within 45 minutes. This is OK if you don't mind the wait, but I can see it being a problem for those who just want a quick snack. the choices are interesting though, plenty for a vegetarian diet.

The décor is very friendly and welcoming, mostly wood floors and dark furniture at the front. Venture to the back and you are welcomed by comfortable covered chairs and a big mirror on the end wall. Up here are the toilets which, at least with the Gents, opens out onto the beer garden - not the toilet, but the door to the gents is also accessible from the beer garden.

One other thing to remember is that the beer is pricey here - £3 a pint. I know it's Madonna's local, but we don't all earn as much as she does.
