The General Tarleton Inn

A free house this one on A6055 on crossroads in Ferrensby. A former 18th-century coaching inn within easy reach of the A1, Harrogate and the Yorkshire Dales, under the same ownership as the equally impressive Angel Inn at Hetton. Tastefully refurbished it sports a rambling, low-beamed bar with open fires, cosy nooks and crannies and real ales - Black Sheep, Tetley, Taylors are the general ones, a light and airy covered courtyard, and attractively decorated en suite bedrooms. One imaginative brasserie-style menu is served throughout, with orders taken at the bar. Follow terrine of ham shank and foie gras or spicy parsnip soup, with monfish with saffron broth, haunch of venison with chestnut mash and winter spiced fruit comp?te, or fresh haddock in beer batter with tartare sauce. Round off with traditional sticky toffee pudding or tiramisu. Good wines; 20 by the glass. Accommodation available, 14 rooms all en-suite, double from ?65. Dogs welcome, children welcome, there is also a no-smoking area.
