The Red Lion

A diminutive delight, and something of a wayfarers retreat. What it lacks in size is more than made up for in character, with wooden seating and benches blending perfectly with the rustic feel of the building. Bare brick walls and a clustered collection of brass bedpans offer the salubrious pleasure of a minimal aesthetic, while groups or couples can find privacy in a large bay window area. Although you can order marinated olives as a bar snack, it's a decidedly unpretentious place. Tucked away at the bottom of a main trail, at the foot of the Malvern Hills. An hour by train from Birmingham or 45 minutes by car. As you're in the countryside, try a pint of Pedigree or Morrells Varisty, or Bank's. The food here is freshly cooked and delicious. Start replenishing spent energy with a ciabatta with cheese and olives or mussels and garlic. Continue with pepperoni tagliatelli the tasty mushroom stroganoff, or fillet of Scottish salmon. Lighter treats - a Greek salad or roasted stuffed tomatoes with goat's cheese and spinach.
