The Speedwell Bar

The Speedwell has a lot of history behind it. It is listed in the national inventory of pub interiors for its Edwardian bar. Although in a large four storey building, the Speedwell only occupies the ground floor. Not much to look at from the outside, it has etched windows and a rather austere frontage. However, inside it has glass dividing screens and a gantry. The moulded ceiling is exquisite. There are two other rooms which either have a TV or a no smoking area. These are welcome, one that the TV is not in the main bar and secondly that there is somewhere to go if you don't like to smoke others people's cigarettes. Unfortunately there is not a lot of food served here (panini and toasties of late), so you have to go down the road if you are peckish. Not far from the station it's worth finding out for its history. No accommodation here, but try the Phoenix on Nethergate which does and also serves real ale.
