Black Horse

This is a real gem of a pub not far from the motorway. It is a 14th century building that has had different uses over the years, not least a goal, a pub and shop. There is a large car park at the rear, which is where you will find the toilets - outside im afraid. You enter inbetween two rooms. From the front the room on the right is a large barn of a room with a fireplace and traditional seating of round tabels anc chairs and has a higher ceiling, but no bar. Across the flagstone corridor is the bar through a door - stoop if you are tall. The serving area is to your right and is not large. From here you can see the beer on stillage behind the bar which has a slope. Beer comes direct from the barrel and is at the right temperature already. For the non beer drinker there is a cider and wine. The seating area has been opened out over the years and the large fireplace with working fire in winter, warms the whole area - note the guns above the fireplace. Seating is at narrow tables and benches/stools and there is a leaning post available. A small room - the 'lock-up' also has a serving area which is also access to the bar, but it is colder here in winter. This is where people used to be kept when they had gotten out of order in days of old - note the bars at the window still. There is a lot of old bric-brac on the walls, particularly of the old landlords and his activities. Pictures of the village also feature.

Food is served only at lunchtimes (not Sunday) but is hearty and filling and well worth getting there early for.

A no-smoking area is available (only lunchtimes) as well - with low ceilings as the pub is below ground level at the front - it can get smokey at times.

A play area for children is also available in the car park area.

A real gem and well worth the visit. Now that I know it's there every time I'm on the motorway it wil be my first port of call.
