There are two pubs in Wing of merit,
both serve good real ale, but only The Kings Arms (dating back to 1649 offering
the charm and character of a traditional country inn) serves high quality restaurant
food. The narrow frontage belies the depth of the pub. You enter halfway up
facing the bar. This is brightly lit and is all bright wood effect including the
floor. The bar serves three real ales with a Grainstore beer always on. All
beers are well kept and can be served without the sparkler if requested. There
are a couple of stools at the bar, but in the main seating is set out to
maximise the space. As this is really an eating pub, there are tables for four
and more available round the open fire with large over flue. The bar area has flagstone
floors, low beamed ceilings, nooks, crannies and two open fires. The
toilets are here and are not suitable for the disabled. To the left of this bar
is more seating for eating as this area is always busy with diners. A small area
to the left of the front door
is
suitable for the disabled, but a further area extending from here is up steps
and so not accessible. The decor in the eating areas has old books on bookcases
and objects of the local area's heritage on display. The food is a wonderful à
la carte menu (though bar meals are also available) along with a range of daily
specials and the choice
is good too. Some choices were roast red pepper and goats cheese cannelloni with
salad & garlic ciabatta £7.90, halibut fillet served on parmesan mash with
oriental spring onions £13.50, fillet steak served on a garlic croute with a madeira
sauce & banana shallots £14.95. The vegetarian choice was better than most
too. Prices were average for this type of food around £8 - £11 for steak. The
Kings Arms is ideally situated as a base for visiting the surrounding market
towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford. Rutland water is only two miles away
and offers a variety of outdoor pursuits to include walking, bird watching,
fishing and golf. Other local attractions include Burley House, Barnsdale
Gardens, Rockingham Speedway and the historic Wing Maze. If you are planning a
function, The Kings Arms can also be booked for up to 40 people. There is a
smaller function room as well. The Kings Arms has eight en-suite letting
bedrooms. Four at ground level and four above.
All rooms are across the access road to the car park and have private entrances. Rooms
are spacious and tastefully decorated with tea/coffee
etc. Prices vary throughout the year and range from £40-£55 for a single and
£50-£65 for a double.
