Situated
on the A1060 between Sawbridgeworth and Chelmsford, and approximately six miles from
Stansted Airport, this is a friendly
village pub, offering a selection of cask conditioned and bottled ales, lagers, fine
wines, spirits and soft drinks from the Ridley's range. The building dates from the
sixteenth century, and features oak beams and wood-burning fires throughout. The
restaurant area includes both smoking and non-smoking areas, while the public bar contains
facilities for darts, pool and dominoes. They also have a picturesque garden to the rear,
away from the main road, which contains both sunny and shady areas. The excellent menu is
available seven days a week, and caters for bar snacks, à la carte meals, Sunday lunches
and occasional specials, including fresh fish on Thursdays and Fridays. Booking (by
telephone) is advisable at all times, especially at weekends. Mick and Pam Miller are
extremely proud of the quality of their cask ales, and have won the Ridleys 'Best Kept
Cellar' award in the past. The beers are all Ridleys, on at the time were: IPA Bitter
3.5%, Rumpus 4.5%, ESX Best 4.3%. Occasional beers are: Wish You Were Here 4.0% for
August/September, Old Bob 5.1% and Essex Light ale 3.1%, Essex Brown Ale 3.4%. Bar Meals
are served lunch and evenings as well as the restaurant. Choices are: Prawn Cocktail -
£3.95; Breaded Mushrooms - £2.95; Soup of the Day - £1.95. 8oz Grilled Sirloin Steak -
£9.95; Gammon Steak - £7.95; Homemade Steak and Ale Pie - £6.25; Deep Fried Breaded
Scampi - £6.95; Chicken with Roast Gravy - £6.25. For vegetarians there is: Stilton and
Vegetable Crumble - £6.25; Spinach and Ricotta Canelloni - £6.25; Vegetable Lasagne -
£6.25. The à la carte menu differs somewhat in grater choice and price.
