WARWICK

Old Fourpenny Shop (27 Crompton Street, off Henley Road, Warwickshire). (01926) 491360. Situated down the road almost opposite the entrance to Warwick Castle, really handy if you want to stay somewhere close. This pub is actually an M&B establishment with a split level bar serving up to six real ales at any one time. The seating area is snug, not a lot of room at all. Traditional dominos are played, though they can be loud in the cramped space. I would hate to see it busy. Also it was quite smokey and there didn't appear to be an extractor fan working. The decor is old pictures and your grannies cast-offs and gives it the air of a locals and middle-aged pub. At time of visit there were: Brakespear Bitter; Britannia, Wally Williams Cock-up; Highgate Old Ale & Burton Bridge Bitter. Strange looks were given when asked to remove the sparkler. This didn't help the beer as it was served a little too cold. Bar food is served and is traditional fare for about £5 a meal. More interesting fare is served in a separate restaurant and naturally costs more. No food in the evenings. Accommodation and full English breakfast is also available in the £35-£45 bracket and is comfortable with tea facilities. Not many en-suite rooms so book early. The pub has three crowns with the English tourist board. If you cant get in here, the Wheatsheaf on the corner of Crompton Street does B&B as well and traditional pub food. Accommodation
