Refurbished in 1998 this pub has the feeling
inside of being too light and airy, which detracts from its external Cotswold charm.
However, the ales served are top notch with Uley Bitter and Uley Pig's Ear on at the time,
plus three guest beers: Burton Bridge Summer Ale, Hampshire Pendragon and Wadworth's 6X.
All served well and with single return valves - not sparklers we were told. There is an
extensive menu - especially for vegetarians and we would recommend eating here. The food
was well cooked and presented and arrived quickly. Prices were around £5.95 for most
dishes. There is a small room to the right with a spiral staircase and appears not to have
been renovated. Upstairs here there is a games room. Inside the bar area there is a huge
barrel - not full of beer though. A fire place sits in the seating area to the left of
entrance. It has beams and wooden tables and stools with a couple of benches. Stools are
thick padded unlike most pubs. There are also bedrooms for £40 all en-suite and a
separate entrance for guests. Rating. A beer garden allows you
to the soak up the summer sun. Seats out front where you can view village life while
supping ale. Parking can be difficult as the pub faces the green where there is little.
Also try the Kings Head on The Street at the entrance of the village. It is a Wadworth's
pub, but does serve some of their occasional ales. Well worth a stop at the Old Crown,
walk up the hill out of the village and see the magnificent view. Steps make it difficult
for the disabled.
