Trunch is a small beautiful village that lies 3 miles
north of North Walsham, and 17 miles from Norwich. It's within easy reach of the
North Norfolk Coast, and the beaches are less than a 5 minute drive away. The
village is easily located from North Walsham, and once in the area, the Crown
Inn could not be easier to find. It lies directly next door to the parish church
whose tower can be seen from miles around! The Crown Inn dates back to the
beginning of the 16th century when it was Copyhold property under the Lord of
the Manor of Gimmingham - Lancaster. According to the deeds, the old Inn was
owned in 1745 by John Norton. He sold it in the same year to Mr Thomas wells of
Worstead, 'a brewer of beer' (Taken from 'The Story of Trunch' by P.J. Goodrich,
published in 1939.) The Crown Inn caught fire on the 30th April 1940, resulting
in the loss of the roof and the living quarters. It was pulled down in 1953 and
rebuilt by Bullards. Over the years, various additions have been made to the
building, mainly relating to the living quarters upstairs. The latest
refurbishment the pub now being a Bateman’s House, has seen the addition of the
cosy restaurant serving simple and delicious fayre. One of only a handful of
pubs in Norfolk to be awarded the prestigious Cask Marque Award for the real
ales (Both Bateman’s and guest ales). The pub also holds an annual beer festival
and has theme nights. Food is served both lunchtimes and evenings (Wed-Sat
12-2, 6-8.30, Sun 12-2, 7-8.30) & includes
both full meals and bar food, although call first if making a journey. Sorry no
