THAME

The Abingdon Arms (21 Cornmarket, Thame, Oxfordshire, OX9 2BL) (01844) 260116. This pub is known locally as 'The Abo'. This 18th-century, former coaching inn offers a fairly modest face to the main street of town but inside several rooms have been opened up to create a long bar with rug-strewn, bare board floors, some exposed brickwork, magazines and newspapers to read and a lively, friendly atmosphere. To the rear, an old bar, is used for functions in the evening and offers an additional lunch menu in summer; beyond this a beer garden comes with rustic tables (some with rustic baby seats attached), slide, swing and climbing frame. The pub serves Hook Norton Best, Marston's Pedigree, Wychert Ale, guest beers, oh and yes, Boddingtons! Features of the food menu are hugely thick 'doorstep' sandwiches and bowls or home-made tagliatelle with various toppings. Other items range from ploughman's platters and burgers to steak and kidney pudding, sausages and mash, Exeter stew with parsley dumplings, and an all-day breakfast. All main menu items are available in children's portions at half price. Bar Food 12-2.30, 6-9 (till 8.30 Fri, Sat, Sun).
