A rather new pub for this part of
deepest Dorset - only built in 2001. However, it looks as though it was here in
the time of Hardy and serves an excellent range of real ales - London Pride,
Greene King Abbott Ale, Palmer's IPA, Palmer's Best (one of these is usually
badged as the house beer). Stratton is off the A37 bypass just north of
Dorchester and so is in easy reach of Hardy country. The inside has stone
flagged floors that keep it cool in summer and an open fire for the winter
months. There is plenty of wood inside around the bar, around the partitions,
etc. Large blackboards tell you what's on food and ale wise. Situated next to the church , the Saxon has become the focus for village
life and tourists alike. Food is served here from a traditional menu that
includes ham's, black pudding and fish. There is a choice for vegetarians, but
not an original one. Food is served both lunch and evening and can look a little
expensive on the eye for people coming from the north (£6.50 for a burger). A beer garden for summer
offers stunning views and the good news is that the Saxon is accessible for the
disabled.
