More a music venue than a pub, it
appears here as it belongs to Gibbs Mew, the Salisbury brewer. An innocuous looking place
from the outside, you'd miss it if it wasn't for the banner outside proclaiming music
seven nights a week and the fact that the one way system in Stoke town center take you
face to face with it. Situated just down the road from the Spode factory, The Wheatsheaf
has posters for decor, though it is not a dive by any means. On the night we were there it
was very civilized, people sitting at tables and drinking quietly before the band came on.
You go through a dingy entrance into a spacious single bar. The stage is situated on the
left and the bar at the far end. Along with the usual crew, the beers from Gibbs were
Salisbury Bitter and XXX Dark Mild. There is no policy to revolve the beers, but as an
alternative to the normal gnats wee you used to get in music venues, it is a godsend. It's
difficult to specify a clientele as it varies with the music on any night. Don't be put
off by that though, there is an eclectic mix of music played throughout the week and all
tastes are catered for. Just give them a ring and they will send you their listing for the
month. Luckily there is no accommodation, or you'd never get to sleep. Try Stoke Tourist Info (01782) 236004.

Now a
Wetherspoon with no music (though they have kept it in their latest
purchases) but better beer. Now there are booths where there used to be a
stage, carpet where there used to be a living mass of goo. At least the
toilets are now habitable. |

I have
almost fond memories of the 'sheaf! It is indeed now a Wetherspoons; as
you might imagine the character's gone, but the beer is soooo much
better..... |
