| The White Horse Inn The Square (about 2 miles off A358) Stogumber Somerset (01984) 656277. |
A Traditional local opposite the 12th-century church and located in a charming village which lies hidden among the vales and combes between the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills. The licensee John Trebilcock took over the pub and turned it around after a rather low period in the pub's history. The pub has featured in The Good Beer Guide many times, and is now also Cask-Marque accredited. John himself has also been a winner of Camra's North Devon Pub of The Year with his previous pub. The White Horse is a proper two bar pub, with log fires and an an adjoining restaurant (Stogumber's old market house). There is accommodation for those wishing to explore both the ales and the beautiful West Somerset countryside. Locally brewed ales take pride of place, either on hand pump or gravity served from the cask, with national favourites guesting. Local cider is also offered from the cask. The meals are substantial and the inn is a showcase for memorabilia of the old Stogumber Brewery, now sadly defunct. Stogumber Ale (recipe no longer known - a tragedy) was reputed to be good for clergy with weak lungs, and a cure for flatulence..........make of that what you will! There is no music here and access for the disabled can be difficult.

| The Inn was bought last October by born and bred in the area John Trebilcock, who was formerly at The Mill Inn, Bish Mill, South Molton. Real Ales definitely a speciality - John and The Mill Inn were Camra North Devon's Real Ale Pub of the Year 2000 - the kitchen is being run by local chef Jamie Brooks and John's brother in law (also local) John 'Fish' Hawes is bar manager. The accommodation is being refurbished, the bar has been cleaned up and livened up, the dining room also. Village trade is terrific, and 'The Johns' are big on the village local aspect. | Hello this is melissa .....you know me at the pub and as you also know I ran off with a crazy Canadian!. I am now living in Canada and just got married. I do miss England but aside from my family and my friends I really miss being able to pop up to the White Horse with my mum and family and mate Miette! John Trebilcock and his partner are fully in command of this excellent watering hole in the centre of the village of Stogumber, best described as the "Oasis of West Somerset". Under their new management this is a really excellent hostelery to enjoy really good beers, excellent pub grub and a fantastic atmosphere. Live music is a main feature of the current management from The Reb Mugots, Stogumbers own rock group to such international star as Tom Tomey with his acoutistic guitar.
