The Red Lion free house is a real
'gem', situated in a picturesque north Norfolk village much favoured by walkers and
birdwatchers. It is a brick and flint cottage which has a thoroughly rural feel, whether
you choose to sit in the bar with real fire and no music, old pews, small settles and
built in wooden wall seats; conservatory or what looks like a converted barn turned into a
vaulted dining-room. The pub specialises in beers from East Anglia's top independent
breweries, including Greene King Abbot Ale, Wolf Bitter, Woodforde's Wherry and 'pale,
hoppy' Great Eastern. Food is also served and is stylish and filling. Local fish (from
King's Lynn market) appears on the menu, Blakeney whitebait, soft herring roes on toast,
crab salad and 'superbly fresh' grilled lemon sole. Other bar meals include salad of
'perfectly ripe' grilled goats' cheese, Thai spring rolls, chunky Norfolk game pie, and
broccoli and Stilton quiche. The short, cosmopolitan wine list (from Adnams) includes ten
by the glass. A beer garden and patio accommodates lots in the summer and the stream adds
a coolness to the heat. Access for the disabled is limited due
to bars being on different floors. Bar
food is served 12-2, 7-9 (school holidays and bank holidays 6.30-9, summer 6-9).
Children are welcome. No accommodation here.

I have been
to the Red Lion on many occasions, and keep coming back. The food is first
class, and the staff are really friendly. I would recommend it to anyone in
the area! (Kevin Gambrill) |

I have used
the Red Lion at Stiffkey several times and I have always found it to be a
first class pub. I can highly recommend it as a watering hole. (David

We've been
to Red Lion several times while on holiday in the village. The pub is
excellent, the beers in very good condition although quite expensive (I have
paid less for a pint of Abbot in central London, and that not at a
Wetherspoons either). The food is another excellent feature. The portions
are large and well prepared, its very popular, so book before you arrive if
you want a table. (Keith Geary) |

I have just
visited the Red Lion in Stiffkey and I would like to comment on how lovely
the staff were towards me, they made me feel really welcome when I was
holidaying alone. I recommend the Roast Norfolk duckling which was very
appetising.10/10 (June 2003) |

I have to
admit disappointment after visiting the Red Lion this year. After many years
of happy dining and drinking there, it seems that there has been a change of
management, and some of the best staff have left. I was not impressed by the
attitude shown toward me and shall not be going again. (15/1/05) |

The Red
Lion would definitely seem to be trading on its past and trying to exploit
the tourist market in North Norfolk. The food is not what it was, with
smaller portions to boot and there are never enough bar staff on Sunday
lunchtime when the pub is busy. It is not cheap either so pretty
disappointing all round really. (22/03/05) |

We visited at
the weekend. The food and service were excellent and the beer first class.
Don't be put off by the previous two comments. (10/10/05) |
