The Plough is very much a country
local that has made a big effort to serve its local community. In my opinion it
has been a success at doing this. There are three distinct rooms, though only
two have a bar. You enter the pub from the front (though there is disabled
access from the car park at the rear also). From here you have the public bar on
your left - a traditional bar with pool table and dartboard and a bare floor.
Seats are round the edges and it can get a little crowded in here on Saturday
nights as it seems to be where people congregate most. The bar is a small cup
shape with stools, which makes it difficult to get served at. The lounge to the
right is larger with carpet and long bench seating around part of the walls.
This is complemented by the dark wood square tables and chairs both in front of
the bar - the other
part
of the cup or 'U' - or closer to the fireplace on its right. The walls are
decorated with all things
Stathern, though the stuffed animals are going a bit far. A corridor to the rear
of the bar leads down the entire length of the pub so you can travel between the
public and lounge bars from the front or the back. Half way down the corridor is
the restaurant area in a room off to the rear of the pub. This is a low ceiling
room with a 'tea shop' feel to it. This is where you will find the carvery,
which is very popular, so booking at the weekends is advised. Food is well
cooked and presented and its' all you can eat. There is plenty of choice for
meat lovers with at least three types available. For vegetarians the choice is
more limited and you will have to make it clear before you settle in that you
are vegetarian so that they can provide you with an alternative main meal. You
are still welcome to the vegetables on the carvery. Food is reasonably priced,
especially as you can literally fill your plate. The beer on this time was the
Brewsters Marquis, though we are told that they sometimes have another ale on.
We recommend the Marquis without the sparkler as it is too light a beer at 3.8%
to be forced into a creamy head. Well worth a visit, plus the Black Horse at
Hose is only just down the road. No accommodation here.
