New Inn
(St Owen's Cross, Nr Ross on Wye, Herefordshire) (01989) 730274. Situated on the cross roads of the
A4137 and B4521 between Hereford and Abergavenny. The pub has excellent ambiance with
large lounge-cum-dining area and separate dining room. Parking is easy and the pub was
easy to find. The landlord/landlady and team were all very friendly including the ageing
doberman! An old coaching inn of 16th century character. Beer quality and choice are
reasonably good. On at the time were: Smiles Best (4.1%) (guest ale) £1.80,
Wadsworth 6X (4.3%) (guest ale) £1.80, Marston's Pedigree. Food is excellent and was even
better than the beer selection. Portions to suit the healthiest apetite. The breakfast was
also of note. The New Inn gives good value for bed/food and drink. There is a
accommodation here Rating Only 2 letting bedrooms but very
large and comfortable. One room has a 4 poster bed with additional lounge area. the
bathroom however was a little cramped but as the building is 16th century allowances had
to be made. The best thing was the friendly and homeliness of the New Inn. The worst was
the fact that Caffrey's was on sale when there were a choice of 3 real ales; the
precocious 5 year old child of landlord (but he will grow up!) This place is something
special. (Bob Sharman)
