Original name - not. Added to the estate in
September 1995, the premises where Wetherspoons now stands has had many varied uses in the
past. Prior to Wetherspoons taking over the property, it had been Sticky Wickets (a
non-too successful "Fun Pub"). Serving the usual Theakstons and Mitchells
bitters for just £1.20 a pint. The cellar has to be the most immaculate pub cellar ever.
The manager certainly keep all the beers in excellent condition, and it is easy to see how
when you see how tidy and well organised the cellar is. The pub gets through 22 gallons
every day of the best-selling beer, Theakstons best bitter, with Mitchells now selling 18
gallons per day during the peak season. It is also an excellent pub for the mild drinker.
Wetherspoons goes through 36-54 gallons per week, depending on the season, so there is no
chance at all of the mild being past its sell by date. Such is the popularity and the
standard of the meals in this particular Wetherspoons that the pub is in the company's Top
10 for food sales in the whole country, which is amazing considering the number of
Wetherspoon pubs in much bigger towns and cities than Southport. There are lavatories and
access to the pub for disabled customers, and a no smoking section for people like me who
don't like pubs where you feel like you have been drinking in a chimney all evening and
your clothes smell like a cigarette factory when you get home. The only people not catered
for in Wetherspoons are children, which I, even as the father of a seven-year-old, have no
objection to at all. There are also no juke boxes, silent fruit machines and no smoking at
the bar, which is all in the interests of good hygiene, a sociable atmosphere and good
conversation. A minimum of two guest beers always on sale, at just £1.29 up to 5% beers,
and £1.39 over 5%, which is extremely good value indeed. The Cotleigh Snowy Ale and
Highgate Old Ale, 5% & 5.1% ABV, respectively, where going down a treat on the night
in question, with a 'real' cider, Weston First Quality, also available. (David Williams)
