The Waterloo Arms is part of the Hop Back brewery chain that now extends to three pubs. Tucked away down the back streets the pub is best approached from the Salisbury road next to the docks. Take the slip road, left, look out for a big church tower, take the first right and you are there. The Waterloo Arms is a small 1930s 'improved' public house in the Hop Back style. Two 'Roman' brick fireplaces form the focal points at either end of the stem of the 'T' shaped pub, the bar being in one limb and a settle and tables filling the other. There is plenty of light coloured wood and nicotine coloured walls, along with the obligatory framed awards that the brewery has won mark it out as a Hop Back house. Traditional pub games are available from behind the bar. Naturally you can find the whole range of Hop Back beers here to try at your leisure. The pub has belonged to Hop Back since 1991, in which time there have been improvements to the cellar and smartened the place up a bit and improved the trade and food sales dramatically. There is a conservatory/function room to be added soon, next to the beer garden at the rear. This sports a boules (petanque) alley. The pub tends to get very busy at the weekends, but Tuesday evenings are quiz nights and it is necessary to get there early to reserve a table. The local CAMRA branch can be found at The Waterloo Arms every Sunday lunchtime. Very little in the way of food here, but some at lunchtimes. There is no accommodation here.

Additional Notes:

The waterloo arms has been our local for a year now. We attend the quiz night as much as possible. Having visited many pubs I have to say the waterloo arms is the most friendly I have experienced, combined with the good company, great food and not forgetting real beers the pub offers, makes for a well rounded and enjoyable pub experience that should not be missed out on when visiting the area.
