Situated on the A27 in between Brighton and Chichester, W. Sussex. The beers on at time of visit were most of the Green King Beers - excellent real ales. There was also a huge wine list. Real Ale is a speciality at this pub. The Gardeners has old country village pub decor with a real open fire. Atmosphere is very relaxed and enjoyable. There is a railway carriage connected to the pub which is used as a restaurant. Food is fantastic - restaurant quality food and pub food prices and the staff are very polite and responsive! Food is served lunchtimes everyday and evenings at the weekend. Everything was just as it should be in a village pub. Rating: The Very Best. | The pub has changed its management since (yet again!) and is looking promising. poor food quality was due to the lack of chef at the time. Great local - best in the area though. unlike the rest - all welcome for a chat and a few beers. (20/10/04) | |
| Once upon a time the Gardeners Arms of West Street Sompting was a very good pub indeed with excellent beers and a very good menu of food. However I have to report that since March 2004 the pub has gone down hill and I see no sign of it stopping! Ever since the previous landlord of 30 years! retired last year the pub has turned from being a friendly local in which you would have a very enjoyable drinking and eating experience, into an over-priced, badly managed sorry state of affairs! Previously the restaurant was run by the landlord's daughter. The food was excellent and the service out of this world. The menu offered a very good choice of meals and catered for all. However, on my last visit I ordered for my lunch ham, egg and chips. This is a dish that I had previously enjoyed under the previous management. Unfortunately the portion was minute, over-cooked and the price had been whacked up an astonishing £8.99! My pint of Carling Lager was warm so you can imagine I won't be dining there again. When I complained to the new landlord (Barry someone) he was very rude and quite simply said that it was TOUGH LUCK! My advice to those visiting Sompting would be to try the Marquis of Granby or the Ball Tree instead. Thank you for reading. A very disappointed customer. (Jason Williams - 1/2/05) |
