SHRALEYBROOK.
This pub opened its own brewery in 1989 and enlarged it in 1994. Brewing has occured on and off since. The Rising Sun is hard to find despite being a stones throw from the motorway. From junc. 16 take the A500 then A531 to the next junction and follow the B5500 across the motorway and then the next right. From Newcastle-under-Lyme take the B5367 and you cant miss it. This pub now serves guest ales, four on at the time of visit. They were Burton Bridge Summer Ale; Robinson's Frederics; Marstons Fever Pitch; Cains England's Glory. Requests for the sparkler to be taken off raised some eyebrows. Homemade food is served lunch and evenings (from 7pm). Even the chips are hand cut from whole potatoes. A very good vegetarian choice is available - 17 of them!! Prices are around £7.95, though steak and trout are more. They don't serve as many whiskeys as they used to. The main bar area (there are two) is bare floored and dark. Ceiling and walls are beamed and walls are ochre in colour. There are plenty of traditional tables and chairs and some red leatherette benches in alcoves and windows. Brasses and odd objects hang from the ceiling. Curtains made from old bar cloths add to the dim lighting. In winter there is an open fire to warm by. The smaller room is a locals area, smoky with lots of conversation. Seating is stools, tables and chairs. Access for the disabled is good with low or no steps to negotiate. Bar is rather high though. Music comes from a jukebox and seemed to be a 70's revival? Large car park and camping in the field - if you can stand the motorway sounds all night. Children welcome. No accommodation here but try: Balterley Hall, Balterley Hall Farm, Balterley, Crewe, CW2 5QG. 2 km from Shraleybrook. £16-£20 for en-suite. Or Betley Court Farm, Betley, near Crewe, CW3 9BH. (01270) 820229. Single £25, double £40 per room.
