Market Porter
9 Stoney Street, LONDON
SE1 9AA

A cosy, wood-panelled and very traditional pub serving a fine range of ales. This pub is opposite the market and as such has a varied clientele. The Market Porter has a lot going for it. The pub opens real early to slake the thirst of the porters between 6 and 8.30am Monday to Friday. The pub keeps a wide variety of very fine real ales alongside the semi-permanent Harvey's Sussex Best. On this occasion some of the beers were Milk Street Nick's, Broughton The Ghillie and Moorehouse Black Cat Mild. All were well kept and served without sparkler. The decor is very real ale pub with pump clips all over the walls and ceiling and everywhere where there is still a space to put them. The floors are all dark wood and rustic, but not in a fake way. The refurbishment has opened up the pub to include what was a public bar on the right. This has been tastefully redecorated in pseudo-wine bar colours, but has given the pub a different side. The bar has been extended here and there are more stools at it. The pub has also extended itself into the shop next door and this area is air conditioned and leads to the gents toilets. It has a see through fireplace - not active - and a mixture of tables and chairs. It is more open that the other areas and can accommodate more people standing. The area to the left of the old bar is still there and you can still play darts. You can still reserve an area for office dart matches, etc. The bar itself is dark wood with glass overhang. Hand pumps are dotted around the 'L' shaped bar, though a chalk board informs you of the latest beer offerings. Seating is limited by the bar with mainly standing  at upturned barrels. The area tot he left of the bar has a few small round tables and is left easy to clear for the darts matches. Food is served Mon-Sun 12-3 (5 Sat) in the room upstairs and is traditional food at reasonable prices for London. There is air conditioning here and a small TV for sports events. No live music and no DJ here (piped music though), you can drink in peace, apart from the rail line going almost overhead. The nearest tube is London Bridge. Also try the Wheatsheaf - Young's a few doors down. A very good pub near the Tate Modern and just South of the river. Also close to the Shakespeare theatre.
