Situated in the small village of Mundford on the edge
of Thetford forest, this 17th century hotel has a very interesting interior. There are two
bars, the public to the left with large pool table and bare floors, TV, cigarette
machine and locals and the lounge to the right with round tables and chairs on carpet. The
walls of the lounge are covered with newspaper cuttings from ages past and market posters
and the like. There is a fireplace, but its not used at present. The bar is smaller here
and has a large overhang. Beers are varied, though the staples come from Courage. On as a
guest at the time was Woodforde's Norkie 5.0%, though Iceni beers can normally be found
here. In one corner is a spiral staircase leading up to the upstairs restaurant. On the
first floor there is a large room for quality food, which is wholesome and adventurous, if
a little pricey in places. The restaurant can get very busy at weekends and it is best to
arrive early. Food is not served all day, despite the Crown being open. Outside there is a
beer garden to the rear with a wishing well - toss a coin and wish for mandatory real ale
in pubs. There is accommodation here in the attic rooms you can see in the picture Rating. The quiet village is very relaxing and if you fancy a
swim/Jacuzzi then the Lynford Hall up the road can accommodate you. Access for the
disabled is not good. There is limited car parking outside as the pub faces the busy
village 'square'. Well worth a visit.
