The Five Horseshoes (Stenor Henely-on-Thames Maidensgrove, Oxfordshire, W of Village from B480) (01491) 641282. This is a well established two bar pub as an eating house. It is an old brick pub standing alongside the lane which winds past Russel's Water, off the B481. Seating is wooden tables with large backed chairs looking like wheels. A real fire keeps you warm in winter. Paper money from around the world frames the low ceiling bar where food is ordered, and there is little enough available (food that is), for two, for less than a crisp bill or two. Food from a comprehensive list is served 12-2, 7-10 (till 9 Sun). choices include a warm salad of chicken and coriander, cassoulet, fillet of fish barracuda with Cajun spices and black butter, and breast of duck with caramelised orange sauce, as well as ploughman's lunches and filled baked potatoes. They also have daily dishes, e.g. deep fried Nile perch in a lightly curried crisp batter or lemon peppered king prawns sautéed in garlic. Follow with home-made ice creams, creme brulee or nutty treacle pie. Barbecues in fine weather (Thursday evening, Sunday lunch and evening). The second bar is for walkers and has the usual no mess floor. The beer garden has patio seating under swaying octagonal awnings. Hidden away to the pubs rear, the Café Shoes attempts a little more adventurous main courses in much the same price range. Individual tables, or a whole room for 20, are bookable in advance. The beer on at the time was Brakspears Bitter with a guest of Theakstones. No children under 8 allowed in the bar. No accommodation here but try: White Hart, High Street, Nettlebed, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, RG9 5DD. 2 km from the centre of Maidensgrove. Price £30+ for en-suite. Open : 11.30-2.30, 6-11 (Sun 12-3, 7-10.30).
