Set half way up the hill from the bay
on the main shopping street, this is a very friendly pub with two distinct
areas. The bar is tot he right of entrance and has a traditional feel to it.
There are stools at the bar and the locals frequent it. The dark bar with
overhang has up to three guest ales, all served well. The seating is at the back
- bearing in mind this is a small room, it can get smoky. The seating is padded
benches and the carpet is thick and draws down the sound from the low ceiling.
The toilet are accessible from here and are pseudo-outside for the gents. The
ladies are on the other side of the pub. This room is set out more as a
restaurant, but you can sit here during the day if you prefer a no smoking
environment. The bar
area
can get very smoky unfortunately. The bay window here gives you a good view of
the high street and if you crane your neck enough you can just about see all the
way. There is a small bar here too, but no hand pump. A step make it wheelchair
unfriendly, but as you can see from the picture, is necessary to allow you to be
upright while drinking. Food is served in both areas lunch and evening.
Naturally the restaurant side has some interesting choices and the prices are
fair for a tourist town. When in Lyme it would be wise to visit the pub as being
at the top of town it is not so busy from tourists and so can dedicate more time
to the serving of good ale and food. Be aware though that Lyme is on a loop road
and so is not easy to get in and out of at peak times. It is also a beautiful
place to see historic Dorset and the coast line. Oh and did I mention the French
Lieutenants Woman?
