Quite why this pub is called Crabtree
is beyond me. The sign depicts a crab enfolded by the boughs of a tree. Not quite a pub,
more a restaurant these days. The building is Georgian, and inside there are various
rooms, bars and corridors complete with an original floor and fireplaces. To one side is
the main dining-room with paintings for sale on the wall, pot plants and floral drapes.
Bar food is served only at lunch-time. The restaurant (No smoking in dining-room) is open
in the evening. Modern British and European food is cooked, e.g. pan-fried duck livers
with spring vegetables and tarragon, seared tuna with cucumber and oregano, and grilled
salmon with a polenta and marjoram topping. The beers are King & Barnes, so you are in
for a treat; Sussex Bitter and Festive Ale were on at the time. No accommodation here.
Wheelchair access is good and there is a beer garden and patio for the summer. Open: 11 to
3, 5.30 to 11, Sun 12 to 3, 5.30 to 10.30

As a resident of Lower
Beeding from 1933 I lived next door to the Crabtree and was connected with
the village until 1960 when my parents moved to Roffey near Horsham. I can
tell you why its called the Crabtree , simply because of the amount of crab
apple trees that grew in the immediate area ie. the adjacent allotments and
gardens , including our own , between the pub and the village blacksmith.
Sadly all they died off along with the Victoria plum trees due to decease
called silver leaf I believe they called it in the 1940's early 50's. Just
thought I'd let someone know.

A pub which you ought to get to before the next lorry
hits it. Situated as it is on a sweeping corner drinkers have sometimes found themselves
sharing their pints with lorry drivers. Maybe it's because of the cheap beer prices? The
two bar pub has a real fire and serves cider too. There is no food, but the beer more than
makes up for it. On at the time were; King and Barnes Sussex, Old, and Festive. It also
has a seasonal from the same brewery on. No accommodation here. [K. Wilson]
