Loch Eck

This inn, a 17th century fishing inn, is situated in the Argyll Forest Park. It has 4 letting bedrooms that have a very steep spiral staircase (not suitable for the disabled). It is famous locally for its roaring log fires. Nice decor throughout with a small friendly bar just off the hallway. The Inn is set on the shores of Loch Eck, just up the road from Dunoon, reached by ferry or by road (2 hours from Glasgow by road) and has an outstanding warmth and character - owner (Richard) makes Basil Fawlty appear a mere eccentric. In the same family for over 30 years. The film "Blue Boy" was made here. This pub re-introduced real ale in the 1970's when many breweries were still trying to kill it off. It used to have a McGlashen water engine for pumping the beer (traditionally Scottish) but the water pressure from the private hill supply cracked the tank! The surrounding countryside is a beautiful valley with super walks. The beers on at the time were from Caledonian, Deuchars abv 3.8% @ £1.95; Orkney Chocolate Porter (guest ale) abv 3.5%; McEwans 80/- abv 4.5%, all beautifully kept and presented. Food is super, ranging from a basic simple bar snack menu to an excellent 'specials' board. Prices range from £1.30 to around £13.50 (local venison with a juniper berry sauce; peppered entracote steak with garlic butter; baked local salmon with warmed prawns and capers £9.50. Very friendly (small) staff. Food is served both lunchtimes and evenings. The Accommodations are 4 small bedrooms, none with en-suite, not for everyone but very much part of the character of this small inn. Comfy, well decorated and clean. Additional Notes:

Don't know if you have stayed a the Coylet recently, the rooms are still tiny but now have en-suites, very well done up less than two years ago. What you have said about Richard, the owner... cracker, that's exactly what I thought! My husband and I had our wedding night there and will continue to go back there as often as possible.
