LITTLE HEMPSTON.

Tally Ho! (Little Hempston, Devon, signposted off A381 NE of Totnes) (01803) 862316. Traditional Devon pub that is a privately owned freehouse. The pub is very cosy with low beams and candles on the tables. There is some wood panels on the stone walls. The rest of the decor is dotted with porcelain, brass, stuffed animals and butterflies, etc. you get the drift. As this is Devon you kinda get an atmosphere from this rather than it being kitsch. Seating is mixed, some chairs some padded/cushioned benches. For the winter there are a couple of coal effect gas fires. Beer on at the time were: Scatter Rock Bitter 4% and £1.90, BASS, and Teignworthy Bitter. Food is served in peace and quiet (no piped music here), served until 10pm, though check first if making a special journey. All food is all fresh and cooked to an excellent standard. There is now accommodation in a converted barn (not seen on this occasion), 4 modern en-suite bedrooms, well furnished with separate entrance. Prices from: £45 double with good breakfast at any time you want it. The pub has a great atmosphere and well kept beer. However, the Gents toilets are a bit grim. Worth a Diversion. Look out for the resident dog and cat
