Black Horse

South Street

off A44
Leominster
Herefordshire

An outstanding free house in the beautiful market town of Leominster. The town has narrow streets and lots of people on them making it a bustling place, especially on Saturday. The Black Horse is situated on the outskirts beyond or just before the centre depending on which way you arrive along the A44. It is a white building abutting the pavement - there is a car park round back through a set of narrow double-gates. This is a genuine 'freehouse' with the best selection of real ales for miles. A two bar pub, the public bar is lively and busy with a dartboard and no carpets to worry the 'loud' drinker. Furniture is rustic but comfortable. The larger lounge/restaurant bar is cosy and snug. There is pew seating around the edges with tables and chairs too. The wooden bar is surrounded by hops and bar clips, reminiscent of a 30's estate interior. Beers on at the time were; Lichfield Resurrection, Hobsons Town Crier and Dunn Plowman BHB plus 2 guests. It also has guest malt whiskey. Traditional pub games are also available to play. Food is served both lunch and evening, not on Sunday. Get there early if you want to eat as they stop serving at 1.45pm lunchtimes weekdays. There is plenty of choice for vegetarians, six in all, plus four starters. Most of these are under £7 (an 8oz steak with the trimmings for only £6.75). Outside at the back there are picnic tables and some grass. If you are travelling by train, there is a stop not half a mile away. There is no accommodation here, but some available in the rest of the town, try Tourist Information.
