Wilkes Head (16 St. Edward Street, Leek, Staffordshire) (01538) 383616. This multi-level boozer is a good solid place to drink. It is Whim ales only tied pub and the best pub in Leek (all the rest are Bank's or Marston's). the small shop font door opens into the small bar area. The bar is brick and wood and has an overhang where all the CAMRA awards hang. The ceiling is whitewash and original beams. There is a gas fire here for winter. To the left is a room with bench seating and stools with wooden tables - access is down a tall step. There is standing room here too with a tall ceiling and was once a shop. There is another room behind the bar area which leads to the (basic) toilets. Here there are velvet covered bench seats and stools again. The atmosphere is very convivial and friendly and has a mixed clientele of men and women at most times. There are baps available most times and they sell 'homemade' stilton cheese by the pound - very tasty. Beers are naturally from Whim, but the choice is great. On at the time were: Hartington Bitter, Hartington IPA, Arbour Light, Special. There were also two guest ales on Jennings Snecklifter and Kelham Island Pale Rider. All served without sparkler and very tasty/well kept. The landlord is very friendly and always willing to talk beer or sport. Access for the disabled is fair to the bar area, though there is limited room in the toilets. Open 11-11; 12-10.30 (sun).
