Not an easy pub to find as it is up a
narrow road next to the canal before the rail bridge and Tesco off the A50. You
will need these directions. But once you find it you will be pleased as it
serves up to five guest ales and a selection of bottled Belgian and German
beers. A real free house, it has all the feel of a real canal side pub - you
know, that slightly damp feeling you get from being near water all the time.
This is not a criticism, just an observation and it adds to the charm - though
the 1970s references all about the interior can get a little much - small
archway windows, thick artex and the paint scheme. In fact it all adds to its
charm and I for one would go back. The beers too are all well
kept
at the right temperature and come in at a keen price for once. The selection of
bottled beers are also good, though limited and are not overpriced as can be
found elsewhere. They also do a farmhouse cider and perry. The pub has won
countless awards from the local CAMRA branch and is not far for the train
station, plus it has a no smoking area and the room at the rear - not always
open - has air con too. For those lovers of canal traditional, Sunday sees folk
music. Oh and it's a dog friendly pub. Unfortunately there is no food served
here - but you cant have everything - you could always try the Tesco up the road
for a snack. No accommodation here and closed Mondays.
