Situated on the B184 Gt. Dunmow to Chipping
Ongar Road, The Black Lion is an old beamed 14th century pub. It has real log
fires in the bar and dinning room to warm you on these cold nights. The two bars
are the lounge & the Rodings bar. This is a Ridley's pub and serves a good
selection of their range including: Ridleys IPA 3.5% @ £1.90; ESX
4.2% @ £2.20; Mild 3.6% @ £2.20; and Rumpus 4.5% @ £2.20. The beers are
all well kept. Food is served all day in the summer, but 12-3pm and 7-10pm in
the winter. We are told the kitchen closes 9.30pm sharp! As for the food itself,
there is a large selection of fresh fish (35 different types), plus homemade
steak & kidney, steak & stilton, steak & mushroom, steak & Guinness
pies. The staff are friendly and helpful and prices start from around £6.50 for
a main meal upwards. The gents toilets is particularly interesting, being full
of Vintage car radiator grills and written reviews of cars, from the Model
"T" to the Ferrari. The Ladies toilets are on the theme of a 'Ladies Boudoir'
with hand creams, tissues, powder puffs, etc. All very very clean.
There is accommodation here. We stayed in the Green Room: double bed, sloping
floor and ceiling, beamed walls. All
rooms are centrally heated with tea & coffee making facilities.
The best about the Black Lion was the homemade food and a good pint. Too Good to
Last.

| Additional Notes: |
The pub was taken over in December 2003 by
John & Jan Devine formally of The Spotted Dog. It boasts a varied menu all
cooked from fresh produce. There is a non smoking dining room which seats 28
and there are also tables available in the bar area. Food is served Mon -
Sat 12-2pm and 7-9pm. Sunday lunch is available 12-2. There is no food
served on Sunday evening. They serve a selection of real ales in a friendly
village atmosphere. Unfortunately accommodation is no longer avaiable. |
