Shakespeare Inn
(9 Baxtergate, Hedon, East Yorkshire) (01482) 898371. This is an interesting pub with a lot of
history. In the last century the pub was a known haunt for the 'Rotten Boroughs' where
food and drink was free if you were prepared to vote for the person providing it. One of
the landlady's was taken to Westminster to be questioned. She was threatened with Newgate
Prison if she didn't tell 'all'!! So she did. The Shakespeare Inn is the oldest pub in
Hedon and has had a license for over 300 traceable years. It was once called The Sir
Charles Sanders after the First Lord of the Admiralty who was also an MP for Hedon. It is
popular with locals and visitors alike. The food is excellent as well, it offers a very
full menu to it's hungry customers including; steaks, home made pies & vegetarian
meals. Fish dishes are also a speciality, and include really superb haddock and chips
known locally as 'Whale on a Plate'? All are very good value for money with steaks costing
£6 and all other main meals a bargain @ £3.95. meals end at 7.30 and there are no
evening meals Saturday and Sunday. There is an outside drinking area for the summer and a
real fire for those cold winter nights. Beers on at the time were; Vaux Mild, Ward's
Thorne BB and a guest beer called Gladstone from somewhere I cant remember now. The staff
are friendly and helpful. You can even phone or fax your order through and it will be
waiting for you when you arrive. It also has an excellent range of whiskies, brewery
memorabilia. It even has old photos of Hedon for you to savour with your meal. Sadly there
is no accommodation here.
