An 18th century coaching inn, very
unspoilt, no piped music, jukeboxes, fruit
machines. Village bar extremely friendly with real fire, nicely decorated lounge bar with
two real fires. Separate (non-smoking) bistro for more up market food. Function room for
weddings/parties etc. Downstairs OK for the disabled but no lifts to rooms upstairs. Nice
ladies loos but gents not so good. Large choice real ales (4 usually), beers on at the time were
Courage Best, Benskins, Pedigree, Wadworth's 6x and Chadburns Oddball. The cheapest was
£1.85. Food is served seven days a week in the bar, garden or
restaurant. Manager is qualified chef and it shows. Bar snacks start at couple
of pounds for sandwiches and average £5 for cooked meals. The emphasis is on local fresh produce, with game, fish, steak and a varied vegetarian choice.
Friendly waitresses, very fast
service. Bistro food more special and average £10 for main course. Set menu in bistro
around £16 for 3 courses. Often fully booked in bistro which also offers a choice of smoking or non smoking
areas. Sunday lunch carvery good value at £5.95. No food Sunday/Monday evenings, all other times. Accommodation (£20 to £40 per person per night)
has been
refurbished - some rooms high quality and comfort and en-suite. Others definitely not at the moment but
soon to be improved. Rating 2. The George Inn boasts a large conference room, The Long Room, which is available for conferences, wedding receptions and parties.
For those games minded there is pool, table football, French boules and table tennis in
the stable or courtyard garden. The best about the pub is its
friendliness and welcome, something special. http://www.georgeinn.co.uk
