The Grey Horse pub is one of the oldest public houses in the region, dating back over 150 years. Originally called the Target Inn, for the past 11years the Grey Horse pub and Derwentrose Brewery have been run by Paul and Rosaleen Conroy. Paul's love of real ales spurred him on to establish the Derwentrose Brewery which now produces over 10 fine ales all year around, the strongest of which is 9% ABV. The pub is also only 200 yards from the Coast to Coast cycle route. This has made the pub a favourite stopping area for cyclists in search of a place to rest, have a quality midday snack and pint or three of C2C Ale before resuming their journey. To ensure the cyclists are comfortable inside whilst their bicycles remain secure outside, the pub has added a number of special bicycle chain points. Two roaring fireplaces also ensure customers are kept warm and cosy during the winter months. Inside the pub is nicely decorated with dark wood tables and chairs. There is also a pool area. Beer comes from its own brewery out back along with a number of guest ales. All were well kept and in good form when visited. It also hold an annual beer festival. If whisky is your thing then there is a large selection too. Food is served only at lunchtimes, but it is hardy grub like doorstep sandwiches.
