This pub is in the old waiting rooms
and station office opened in 1999. In fact it has taken over the whole station buildings on the
one side of the tracks. The line goes to Shrewsbury and beyond and you can still
get off the train her, though not very often. The pub itself has that friendly
feel inside and never loses its charm as a station. The bar is to the left of
the picture and is not as big as you'd expect, but it does serve three good
Holden's ales plus a guest or two and the Holden's seasonal ale every month. All are served well and taste great. Food is
served here in all areas, including a conservatory at the rear top the right of
the picture. This was added to increase space for eating and just sitting as
there is only the one main room for seating inside and the bar area. Be warned,
the bar and seating area can get smoky, so the conservatory is your best bet if
you want to breath and eat. That said, don't let it put you off as the pub is
good and the beers excellent. The food is traditional and not too expensive, but
the portions a little under-sized for our appetite. Food is served lunch and
evening, but not on Sunday evenings. The inside has the obligatory train
memorabilia all over the place, but access for those with disabilities is good.
For the summer apart form the conservatory there is a raised area with picnic
benches for watching the trains go by. A summer beer festival is usually held at
the end of the car park, which while long, is not wide in places. Worth a stop
on the train (hourly direct service from
Birmingham/Shrewsbury), or by car. The TWM
535 stops 5 minutes away in Bakers Way. No music here. Children welcome in the conservatory
area. Voted Wolverhampton CAMRA Pub of the Year
2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, CAMRA (National) Staffordshire Pub of the Year
2003 .
