The Grove Inn (10 Wellington Road, Telford, Shropshire) (01952) 433269. Beers vary and you can find at least 2 on at any one time (Enville and Moles Brew 97 at the time). Situated just a mile and a half away from the historic and picturesque Ironbridge Gorge these two pubs are in such close proximity and have their own separate advantages that they need to be mentioned together. The Grove has its own basement restaurant featuring a wide range of French and English food (though the vegetarian choice was limited to one dish). The portions were sufficient though the staff were a little distant. Booking is advisable for a Saturday evening. The Grove Inn, whilst not a real ale pub, has excellent en-suite accommodation which is reasonably priced from £55. The pub was undergoing a process of refurbishment when visited which should improve its standards even further. The licensee was particularly keen to oblige even down to leaving a continental breakfast tray outside the room for those who could not get up for a cooked breakfast. The Grove has been taken over recently and now has a real ale rotating every week and one always from Enville Ales. Accommodation


The Coalbrookdale Inn (12 Wellington Road, Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, TF8 7DX 1.5 miles out of Ironbridge) (01952) 433953. This pub is situated directly opposite to the Grove Inn and offers no accommodation although it has a fairly extensive menu served until 8pm Monday - Saturday though no meals on Sundays. Vegetarians are well catered for with a choice of at least 3 meals. The forte of this lively (almost boisterous) pub is its extensive choice of real ales served from 7 handpumps. Local CAMRA pub of the year in 1993 - a visit is a must. Consider combining its with a stay at the Grove Inn. Other attractions in the area are the Museum of Iron situated 2 minutes walk away together with the Ironbridge Gorge and all its attractions. The two pubs combine good food, good accommodation, good beer and lots to see - who could want for anything more?! (S. Lyons)
