A large pub just off the Coventry
road - the A428. This pub is part of the King Henry's Taverns and though all the
same in terms of menu and usual ales, this one has the Frankton Bagby brewery
out back and so serves up to three of its glorious ales. All were well kept and
served with or without sparklers. The pub is on the village green and attracts a
lot of people in the summer months. That said, it is large inside and there is a
non-smoking conservatory which is the lightest and airiest part of the pub,
though the seating is rather close together. With rattan furniture and light
curtains, there is a good atmosphere in here. The rest of the pub has a darker
feel to it, though this is part of the charm of a traditional country pub.
Disabled access is possible from the front to part of the bar, though the
toilets are not accessible. The seating here is traditional dark wood tables and
chairs in the nooks and crannies that this pub has a plenty. The dark wood bar
is on two levels - though you can
access
it from outside both of them. It is a long 'L' shaped bar, and so at busy times
you need to be patient, but they do their best to serve everyone. It helps that
the clientele are there as much for food as beer. The decor reflects the theme
of the pub - the smithy and so there are plenty of blacksmith's tools about
along with pictures and bric-a-brac. Food is served everyday at lunchtimes and
evenings until late - though check for times. Food is traditional pub fayre such
as steak, Guinness and mushroom pie, seafood platter, and a selection of
vegetarian meals. Prices are cheap, from £3 to £11 for a 32oz steak! There
really is something for everyone here including a children's menu. if you prefer
wine with your meal, they do a particularly good deal with an open bottle, which
if you buy it cost much less than by the glass. For the summer, you can sit
outside the front by the large car park, or by the children's play area. No
accommodation here, but The White Lion 2 miles away which does, also serves real
ale. Well worth a stop if you are at Ryton
Gardens which is 2 - 3 miles away.
