Malt 'n' Hops

The pub (near Chorley train station) has
a real fire and good disabled access. The Victorian style deco is everywhere. Very
friendly bar staff; clean toilets; handy location for the trains. Food is good
sandwiches and a good selection of bar snacks, normally until 7pm but parties are catered
for. Real ale selection from all over the country, very good quality. Beers on at the time
were: Taylor's Landlord, Moorhouses Pendle Witches Brew; Fullers London Pride;
Heather Fraoch, Cains; Smiles and one from the Kitchen brewery. No beds but a really good
selection of real ale. Liked best: friendly atmosphere. The worst thing is
having to drive home. The Malt 'n' Hops. is well worth a diversion.

Visited the Malt and Hops
last night on the recommendation of a friend of a friend - and found it to
be quite a revelation! Chorley on a Saturday night is not a pretty
sight, yet here was an oasis of good beer, good people (the bar staff, as
you say, were very pleasant indeed) and good conversation. There was
music, but not so loud as to be intrusive, and the atmosphere was one of
warmth and comfort. What was really astonishing was the range of
quality beers available - there must have been at least eight, including
Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Swallow IPA, Exmoor Stag, Wychwood Dirty Tackle
(not the easiest beer in the world, I found), something called Robin,
something called Gunpowder, amusingly...
All in all, I would congratulate the staff and thoroughly recommend the
Malt and Hops, even to out-of-towners. (Chris) |

What a lovely
pub this is! No muzak, nice higgle-piggledy layout inside, nice and warm,
good mix of people and great beer. Three of us came down on Monday afternoon
and had a great time, including a nice bit of craic with some fellow
ale-lovers whom we met in there. I'm ashamed to say I can't remember which
beer I had but it was a Beartown one and it was lovely. Just one slight
disappointment was that hardly any of the interesting Asian food and pies
advertised on notices around the pub was available - it was "coming soon"
the landlady said. It might have been an idea to put a label on the posters
until it was ready. Apart from that though, it was a gem of a place. (Cliff
