Just north of Salisbury this Gibbs Mew pub is a thatched cottage pub
with outside seating with arbor (no roses though) and
plenty of grass too. It is easy to miss as its right on a small roundabout and the entrance is
narrow and lined by a low fence. Inside are low period beams and ceiling and is very
welcoming. There is only one bar which is 'L' shaped. The smaller tail having traditional
bar billiards and seating area of tables and chairs (they like rugby here) and comedy
pictures of the brewing process on the walls. The far end of the pub is for eating from
the extensive menu of traditional pub food (12-2, 5-9) at reasonable prices (average
£5.95). Tables
can also be booked. At time of visit Ringwood Bitter and Shepherd Neame Spitfire was on. These were
well served, though a top up was needed, but bar staff are not told this. The
staff in general were very friendly. Food is served here and the quality is
excellent, though so are the prices and it now seems like a restaurant with a
couple of real ales on. Look out for the pub cat, a
large black and white one, fat and friendly!

Hi, we are the new owners of
the Crown inn Cholderton. Just thought we would send a little update of
your review. We would like to extend a very friendly welcome from Jeremy
and Lynne, all the staff, the two spaniels, and the two cats. We offer beautiful
beer, fabulous food, willful wines from around the world, an extensive
home made vegetarian menu, log fires, specialty evenings and a newly
refurbished bar and dining area. Welcome one and all, please give us a
call. (28/01/01) |

Cider often
flat, Guinness not served right, wines expensive, lager OK, food
good but expensive, beer OK but rushed. Emphasis on food and not laughter.
Good regular clientele, but slightly forgotten during grockle times. Music
terrible, stuck CD's. Good pub to visit. Better than this alcoholic can
report on. Landlords good with clients but should stop their stealth price
rises!! Certainly worth a visit.
The decor is new due to the floods over Christmas. Disabled access is good
and the locals very willing to help anyone in need. The bar is most
accessible and the toilets have a clean smell about them and are generally
very good. As a confirmed alcoholic, I would say the atmosphere in this
pub is good, not cliquey, as an outsider you could walk in and join in any
of the arguments that are frequently going on in here and not feel ostracized.
Good pub, bar the prices and the Landlords TB!!
The food is very good - a bit pricey but in line with other pubs in the
region. I had a ploughman's recently which I could not finish. Most tasty,
it is awful sitting in their some evenings when food goes passed you and
it not only looks good but smells lovely too!! Very good range in meals,
if not prices. This is the trend though. Food to my knowledge is served
from 12-9pm daily, 7 days a week.
There is no accommodation available. There are hotels and motels very
close by. This is a great pub to visit, everyone is friendly, just get in
there and get on with it!
I like best the atmosphere of the place, it's a friendly pub with quite a
few locals calling in there every day, you can join in any
conversation without feeling an outsider, the food is of a very good
quality, fresh, cooked to order, the beers are kept well although pricey,
wines are the landlords speciality, if you are looking for a proper
English pub, this is your one to visit.
To be honest, the only fault I could find was the poor landlords cough. A
little off putting at times, but made up for in plenty by the warm welcome
not only by the staff but by the alcoholic regulars! Definately a pub to
go back and visit in 'off season' times. I have been drinking there for at
least 15 years and would recommend it to anyone! Worth a Diversion. (5/6/01) |

The beer is
well kept, the lines are cleaned regularly to make sure they are ok -
Ringwood, London Pride.
The pub is a lovely old thatched place, with heaps of hanging baskets and
tubs. Very pretty. There is a real fire which is lit in the colder months.
The toilets are very good. Access for disabled people is not a problem.
The bar is right in front of you as you go through the door. The decor is
very good, having recently been done right through the pub. There is
a non-smoking area which is proving very popular.
The food is very good, you have large plates which are well filled.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. The prices are well in line with
all the other local pubs, but here you get fresh food, cooked to order.
There is a very good vegetarian option as well. Food times: 12-2pm and
6-9pm.
I like best the atmosphere of the place. You are greeted with a warm
genuine welcome and made to feel welcome, stranger or regular alike. I
cant think of a bad feature to the place. (Added: 2001) |

The place
has been developed further to the direction of food now and there is just
one bar and two dining areas; one for smokers, the other for nons. Shut for
three months at the start of the year again due to flooding. The landlord's
cough is worse and has clearly taken it's toll. There are now two resident
chef's who's dishes are superb. You will go a very long way indeed to find
better. The bar staff are fantastic friendly and fun. Food prices are too
high by anybody's measure - is any soup worth over £5.00? - these are West
End prices and more in Wiltshire. But, as said, the food is superb. Bit of a
pain having to choose your food from the one menu on the wall at the far end
of the dining area; table menus are obviously too much effort. At times you
may have to wait a bit too long even to get a drink at the bar - but don't
blame the staff, they really do their best. Don't expect everything on the
menu to be available all of the time. I tried to order three different
dishes and each was not available even though they weren't marked as such -
worse, though, the staff hadn't been told and didn't know until they found
out in the kitchen. Frustrating or what? (25/4/03) |

Since new
landlords arrived in 2004 I cannot give an opinion on beer, food etc. as the
reputation of this pub is so bad in our village that I wouldn't waste my
time and money going in. I did put my head in the door just before Christmas
to ask if they would like the carol singers from the church to come in but
they said in no uncertain terms to go away. Most locals have either been
banned or abandoned it for better locals in neighbouring villages. I hope
they go broke soon so our village can get back its only amenity. I'd be
interested in an outsider's opinion, but your website definitely needs to
update its record on this pub. (29/1/05) |

I have
recently visited the crown inn Cholderton and I have found its a much
pleasanter place, I visited a few years ago and found the locals to be
hostile and the prices as bad as the food but now there is a good selection
of food available and fairly priced to suit the average person. I found the
atmosphere more friendly than when I last visited. the landlord and lady
were friendly and accommodating. they seemed to be better than the previous
owners who I had the misfortune of meeting. All round great pub friendly
staff nice ales and kids and dogs were more than welcome which makes it a
family pub. so check it out for yourself . (2/3/05) |

The crown inn
is a nice pub, friendly and helpful and the food is good pub grub and not
over priced. The atmosphere has improved over the past few months, mainly
due to the banning of some of the more unsavoury local characters who seemed
to feel that they had a right to a say in the running of the pub. Mandy and
Gordon are honest people who don't tolerate fools gladly and in my opinion
this is a very good thing, too many village pubs are spoilt by surly
unwelcoming local people. Good luck to Mandy and Gordon and we hope to see
you around for a good many years yet. (14/4/05) |

I have read
all the reviews above and I have to say that wishing someone to go broke is
exactly the right reason to ban someone from the pub, it's not exactly
Christian is it? I found the Crown to be a nice pub, the landlady was
friendly and helpful and the food was good and reasonably priced. I don't
drink and was delighted to find that I spent a small amount on a soft drink
rather than being ripped off as so many pubs do today. It is my mission to
visit all of the pubs between Salisbury and Marlborough and review each one.
I noted that the Old Inn at Allington did not have a web site, pity, I
wanted to warn people against going there, the locals are
hostile and the landlord/lady rude and unhelpful. Not a nice atmosphere!
