CHESLYN HAY.

Woodman Inn

An estate pub from the outside, this is at the top of the Cheslyn Hay, near the railway bridge. Best to approach it from the A34 if driving. If walking we recommend you either like long walks or you take a taxi as it is some 1.2 miles from the station and it is not obvious, even from the map. It says free house outside and this borne out from the little off license shop that is accessed next to the main entrance. The beers on tap were Marston Pedigree, Theakston XB, Ridleys Valentine and Charles Wells Bombadier. All had a sparkler on, but this could be removed if you wanted without question and top ups were given with good grace. The pub is mainly an eating establishment and there are plenty of tables for food. There is even an extension conservatory (for family eating - no smoking) which needs to be separately heated in winter. Food is served Tue-Fri 12-2, Tue-Sat 6.30-9.30 and Sun 12-2.30. The menu is popping with choice, even for vegetarians. All prices are good (low) at about £4 for most of the main courses. Only steak rises to £8, but that is to be expected. Service is quick and the food is well presented, though the portions could be slightly larger for my taste. There are two bars, a traditional public bar with TV and pool table and a lounge/eating bar where there are two semi-circular booths with studded comfortable benches and the rest are dark wooden chairs and stools. Tables are also dark wood and square. The decor is a little 1980s with flowery wallpaper and carpet. On the walls and beams by the bar are traditional hanging jugs. Access for the disabled is possible, though there is a step or two to get in. The seating is widely spaced which makes it easy to manouvre. The toilets are clean and smell free and are in a separate corridor with glass cased cigarette cards. Very much a locals pub and the atmosphere is friendly, if smokey in the bars. The nearest railway station is Landywood, but the walk is not easy. A children's play area is outside for the summer months. No accommodation here but try: The Roman Way Hotel, Watling Street, Cannock, Staffordshire. WS11 1SH (2 km from Cheslyn Hay). Per Person Per Night from £31.
