The setting of this pub couldn't be more seductive as it's a
seven-centuries-old thatched cottage, warmed by a large log fire. The walls are covered,
rather oddly, with decorated with carved walking sticks. There are also a number of farm
implements and even an eel-catcher's basket hung from the ceiling. It's a quite place
without loud music. The real ales are local and kept well. They come from the Otter
Brewery at Luppitt, about five miles from Broadhembury. On at the time were Otter Bitter,
Ale, Bright and Head. there is also a good wine list to have with food. Fish is this pubs
focus. Bar food is expressive, for example, 'Gang Plank', a huge plate laden with thickly
buttered fresh bread, smoked salmon, gravlax, prawns, ripe Brie and a tiny,
well-dressed salad. Wow! Other food includes open sandwiches, marinated
herrings, roasted cod with anchovies, salmon fish-cakes with tomato and dill
sauce. The prices vary from £5.25 for a sandwich! to £16.75 for brill fillet with
horseradish hollandaise.
A more extensive three-course fixed-price menu is served in the restaurant
area (£27.50). Food served 12 to 2, 7 to 10. Wheelchair access is good and they
have a WC that's easy to negotiate. The beer garden is pleasant for the summer.
Well behaved children are allowed in the eating area of the bar and in the
restaurant. The good thing is that dogs are also allowed in bar.
