The Lobster is a popular pub with an extensive range of lagers and real ales
always available. The Lion and Lobster is tucked away
in between the seafront and Western Road in Hove. The location on Sillwood Street
is sufficiently distanced from the anonymous row of town centre pubs and bars to
help the Lion and Lobster remain a haven for those who know it’s there and yet
is central enough to make it a pit stop on a big night out. The landlord, Jack Harding, recently won Landlord of the Year at the Juicy
Awards. He heads a friendly and efficient
team who work hard to make the often busy pub a lively venue. Regulars at the small establishment are a genuine mix of 20- somethings to 40 -
somethings; a casual and friendly crowd made up mainly of groups of mates out
for a quiet beer. The traditional horseshoe-shaped layout made up of different rooms lends an
intimate feel and is perfect for this. Smaller tables are situated around the
C-shaped bar and are complemented by bar stools and standing room. The only
complaint I have heard about the space is that when the pub is full, which it
quite often is, it can be a struggle to get to the loos. The atmosphere is inviting, relaxed and happy and there is always lots going on
as the Lion and Lobster screens major football and rugby events and is also a
popular venue for live music. The Lion and Lobster is one of only a handful of places in Brighton and Hove to
offer 21 choices on draught and also shakes a mean cocktail. A pint costs
around £2.30. It is not just the beer which attracts people to return time and again to the
pub. It also offers an impressive range of food (reasonable (prices) which includes not only the
traditional roast dinner, Pan Fried Chicken Supreme
£4.75, Irish stew £4.50, steaks and chicken
Kiev but also veggie
and bean burgers with mango chutney, Chinese
Vegetable Stir Fry £4.50 and Thai green curry. Once you have found the Lion and Lobster it easily becomes a favourite haunt
catering for all occasions from a quick mid-week pint, a noisier Friday night
out, a venue to soak up the atmosphere of a big match or the place to go for a
lazy Sunday lunch. No accommodation here.

The Waggon and horses is situated in Church Street opposite The Royal
Pavilion. A real locals pub with a warm welcome for new faces. The decor is traditional
without being overpowering, clean and bright with good quality paintings with local
interest. Good disabled access to the bar and toilets. The ales on at the time were not
the largest selection but all in excellent condition including Harvey's Best @ £1.95; Old
Speckled Hen @ £2.22; Directors @£2.10; Budvar on draught @ £2.40. As for food, only
bar food available from midday to 3 o'clock, but tasty bangers mash and peas with gravy
for just £2.50 !! Sandwiches, jacket potatoes, and daily specials all served by friendly
staff. Has a great atmosphere, but can be a little smokey when busy, but they do have air
filters installed. Sorry but no accommodation available here, however the staff are more
helpful than the local hotel agencies. But try: Worth a Diversion (R Payne)

Harvey's Ales
are the best! And The Lord Nelson Inn in Brighton (just out the door of
the train station to your right, then next left down the hill on Trafalgar
Street a few blocks to 36 Trafalgar Street) keeps them in top condition (a
plaque outside the doorway says something like "Casque Marque"
checks up on them.) Nice little beer garden, too. Very friendly folks.
Tell 'em the guys from Waco sent you! Enjoy. (Jess) |
