This is another Wetherspoons conversion from an old shop at the top of the High Street, in fact at the opposite end from the White Rose.  It has the usual seating styles, though there is no raised area here. There are some large booths that seat about 10 people, which you can either see as intimate or a bit like sharing your love with everyone. The decor celebrates local heroes as always and could be a little more exciting, as the pub lacks atmosphere (not true of other Wetherspoon pubs). However, the beer is always good, though bar staff could do with a bit of training about how to serve real ale. On at the time was a beer from Clarke's and one from Exmoor. The food is from the ubiquitous menu, though always served well and keenly priced, especially here in Bilston. Access for the disabled is good and there is a no smoking area. No accommodation here.

Situated in what used to be a real ale desert, this pub has put a reason back into going to Bilston for a night out. Boasting at least ten (10) real ales on at any one time - including Monday to Wednesday, they are all kept in good quality and if you bring your CAMRA card you get 10p a pint off. A pretty innocuous looking pub just off the Black Country Route roundabout before Morrisons in a difficult place to park (though try the car park round the corner). The Rose has a serene atmosphere that is restful and not too busy. There is plenty of seating - wooden tables and chairs - down its oldrose_inside_bilston.jpg (41189 bytes) considerable length which gives it an airy feeling (though can get smoky). The dark wooden bar is next to the door and is long with plenty of hand pumps to choose from. Half way down is a bar billiards table and a fruit machine. There is plenty of food on offer - though not a great deal for veggies. Most is traditional (chicken, beef, fish) with a daily changing specials blackboard. Prices are reasonable too. Access for the disabled is possible as the Rose is all on one level. The former stables may become a beer garden by the time you visit. Bilston bus station is three minutes away and the Metro light railway is round the corner. No accommodation here. Wolverhampton CAMRA Pub of the Year 2002

Additional Notes: The Olde White Rose has become very uncaring towards it's original customer base. The prices have increased  and the quality of the food has lessened considerably. The arrogance of the owner towards his regular customers has increased, as has his uncaring attitude to his staff (there is a very high turnover of staff which I think speaks volumes). It used to be a friendly well stocked clean pub but now is dirty (particularly the ladies toilets) and unfriendly. More importantly the beer is not always up to scratch. (Jayne Brooks, 16/5/03)
Well I am not sure which pub you are drinking in but having been in there today (19/12/03) this doesn't sound like the same place. The beer was spot on, and having used the pub on a regular basis, cant help but notice how the service has improved. The staff were polite and really friendly. The staff knew their stuff about ales and offered me as many samples without me even having to ask. Nothing seemed too much trouble, and OK the bar was heaving and we did have to wait a while to be served the staff took the time to make me feel as if they wanted my custom. I strongly suggest the author of the review goes back in and if not satisfied visits a Wetherspoons pub, and then she will see what a poor pub is all about. As far as I can see, this report has undertones of a personality clash and is not the usual unbiased report you would expect from CAMRA members who should embrace pubs like this, after all no matter what the attitude of the owner, he is providing a service which CAMRA have been screaming out for, for many years and to knock him down.
